Veterans lead Warriors to home opening win

Four days ago, Craig Nickel was named the interim head coach of the women's basketball team. Today, Nickel has his first win in his first attempt as the Warriors dominated the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues to take their home opener by a score of 68-52.

Waterloo took a 17-15 lead after the opening quarter and opened that up to an 8 point lead (39-31) into half.  After both team's put up 12 in the third, Waterloo cruised to the finish line outscoring the Blues 17-9 for the 16 point victory. Waterloo were led by their veterans as Emily Wilk (Oakville), Kristen Osborne (Markham) and Jenel Ulman (Hamilton) combined for an impressive 43 points.   Osborne was Waterloo's top point getter with 16 points going 7-for-20 from the field with two from outside.  Ulman was next with her 14 points going 5-for-16 with three from downtown while collecting six assists.  Wilk had 13 in her 36 minutes of action with nine rebounds and six assists.  Nicole Schlick (Prince George) was also solid on the boards bringing in eight rebounds.

For the visiting Blues it was Rahshida Atkinson doing most of the damage with 16 points while Keyira Parkes had nine.

Waterloo will get to enjoy this victory for awhile as their next action isn't until November 18 when they take on York on the road.  Their next home contest comes on Sat, November 26 against Western.
