Box Score When a team starts to break out from an offensive slump, the goals often come from an unlikely source. Or, in the case of the Waterloo Warriors, four unlikely sources.
A quartet of Warriors defencemen accounted for five goals, and the Warriors snapped their four-game slide with a decisive 6-1 victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday night in St. Catharine's.
Stephen Silas (Georgetown) scored twice, while
Sam Caldwell (Cape Breton),
Cam Wind (Barrie), and
Eric Cimino (London) added goals from the back end.
Nick Halagian (St. Catharines) chipped in with a goal and an assist, while
Zac Coulter (Owen Sound) notched two helpers for the Warriors, who improved to 4-7-3.
Brody Silk scored the only Brock goal, as the Badgers fell to 7-7-1 with their fifth consecutive loss.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton) earned the victory between the pipes for Waterloo, turning aside 22 shots in the win. Adam Beukeboom started for the Badgers and made 17 saves on 23 shots through two periods, before Alex Brooks-Potts came in for a clean 13-save third period.
The Warriors have averaged fewer than two goals per game this season, but you wouldn't know it from their start on Saturday. Caldwell opened the scoring mid-way through the first, with assists going to Halagian and
Mitchell Smith (Plainfield). Wind made it 2-0 Waterloo shortly thereafter, as Coulter and
Tommy Tsicos (Barrie) added helpers on the second Waterloo goal.
Silk cut the Warriors lead to 2-1 with lesson than five minutes to play in the first, but Halagian responded just 15 seconds later to restore Waterloo's two-goal lead.
Mitch Elliot (Prince George)t drew the lone assist, as the Warriors went into the first intermission leading 3-1.
The second period scoring was opened in milestone fashion, as Cimino scored his first career USports goal at 5:37 of the middle frame to make it 4-1 Waterloo. Then, in the late stages of the period, Silas scored twice in a span of 43 seconds to propel the Warriors to a 6-1 lead after 40 minutes. Coulter and
Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge) assisted on the first Silas marker, while
Cam Nicoll (Loretto) drew the only helper on Silas ' second goal.
The Warriors continued to play staunch defence in the third, limiting to the Badgers to just six shots in a scoreless final stanza. For the game, the Warriors outshot Brock 36-23.
The Warriors will now return home to face the Western Mustangs in their penultimate game of the first half on Thursday, December 1. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm at the Columbia Icefield Arena, and live on oua.tv.
