Warriors edged by Lancers in OT

Box Score The Waterloo Warriors offense showed signs of breaking out of their slump on Saturday night against the Windsor Lancers, but the black and gold fell one goal short of snapping their losing streak.

The Lancers erased a third period deficit, and defenceman Todd Ratchford scored in double overtime to give Windsor a 4-3 victory at the South Windsor Arena.

The Warriors got goals from Phillip Fife (Oromocto), Zac Coulter (Owen Sound), and Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge), but it wasn't enough, as they saw their record fall to 3-7-3 on the season. Sonnenburg also added an assist for a two-point night, while goalie Chris Hurry (Summerland) made 31 saves in defeat.

Steve Anthony, Dylan Denomme, and Justice Dundas scored in regulation for the a Lancers, who improved their record to 7-6-1. Sebastian Beauregard chipped in with two helpers, while Kris Joyce made 29 saves in the Windsor net.

The Warriors came out the more energetic club in the first period, and they earned the game's first goal when Phillip Fife (Oromocto) kept on a 2-on-1 and beat Joyce 5-hole.

Later in the opening frame, the Lancers got goals from Anthony and Denomme just 1:12 apart to claim a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short-lived though, as Coulter wrister home his own rebound on the man advantage, making the score 2-2 after 20 minutes.

After a 1-for-42 stretch to start the season, the Waterloo power play struck for the second consecutive time midway through the second. This time, it was Sonnenburg who cashed on the man advantage, as he ripped a shot from the high slot past Joyce to make it 3-2 Waterloo after two periods.

Dundas knotted the game up 3-3 early in the third, finishing a gorgeous individual effort with a backhander that squeezed through Hurry. Both clubs had a chance to find the winner late in the third and throughout the first overtime, but Ratchford earned the win for Windsor when he powered a one-timer past Hurry early in the second overtime frame.

The Warriors will now head into a rare one-game week, when they face the Brock Badgers next Saturday, November 26 at 7:15 pm. The game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
