Redmen power past Warriors with big first period

Box Score

An explosive first period from McGill had the Warriors seeing red on Saturday afternoon.

The Redmen scored four times in the first 20 minutes, and Christophe Lalonde notched a hat trick in a 7-1 victory of the Warriors in a matinee affair at the Columbia Icefield Arena.

McGill also got two goals from Samuel Hodhod, including a highlight reel tally late in the first. Guillaume Gauthier added three assists, while Redgie Bois, Frederic Gamelin, and Simon Tardif-Richard all contributed with multi-point efforts for the 8-2-1 Redmen.

Michael Siddall (St. Mary's) scored Waterloo's only goal, as they saw their record fall to 3-6-2. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) was victimized for four goals on nine shots in the first period, before being replaced by Chris Hurry (Summerland). Hurry allowed three goals on 13 shots the rest of the way, while Jacob Gervais-Chouinard earned the victory with 25 saves for the Redmen.

Hodhod opened the scoring for McGill just 1:37 into the game, when he fired home a one-timer on a two-on-one down low. Lalonde scored back-to-back goals to make it 3-0 Redmen, and Hodhod rounded out the scoring in the opening stanza when he spun around a defender and slipped the puck through Morrison's five-hole to make it 4-0.

The Warriors carried the play as the second period began, but McGill added a goal just shy of the period's mid-way point when Daniel Milne smacked a loose puck to the top shelf over Hurry's glove. Four minutes later, Siddall broke the goose egg when he shoved home a rebound of a Stephen Silas (Georgetown) point shot to make it 5-1 after two periods of play.

Tardif-Richard added a power-play marker just past the nine-minute mark of the third, while Lalonde completed the hat trick on a man advantage in the game's final minute to round out the scoring.

The Warriors will now look to snap their two-game slide when they face the Ryerson Rams on Friday, November 18. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
