For the second time in three days, the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team established a slim lead and held it into the third period. But for the second time in three days, they weren't able to turn it into a win.

Derek Schoenmakers scored in overtime after Erik Pushka tied it late in regulation, as the Laurier Golden Hawks came back to defeat the Warriors 3-2 in overtime at the Brantford Civic Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Stephen Silas (Georgetown) and Zac Coulter (Owen Sound) scored for the Warriors, as they established a 2-0 lead on the second period. Mike Moffat (Waterloo) drew an assist in Silas' goal, while Mike Morrison (Hamilton) stopped 38 shots on defeat.

The loss is Waterloo's second straight in extra time, and it drops their overall record to 1-2-2. The Warriors have now played three overtime games in their first five contests, going 1-2 in games decided beyond the 60-minute mark.

Playing in front of a homecoming crowd near the Laurier Brantford campus, the host Hawks were dominant on the shot clock, especially in the game's first 40 minutes. But it was Silas that drew first blood for the Warriors, scoring Waterloo's first power play goal of the season midway through the second frame.

Just over three minutes later, Coulter added an unassisted tally to extend Waterloo's lead to 2-0, while Morrison stood tall in the Warriors net. However, Laurier was able to break through with just nine seconds left in the second period, as Luke Hietkamp found twine to make it 2-1 after two.

The Warriors were less than four minutes from victory when Pushka scored to even things at 2-2. Then, just short of the three-minute mark of the first overtime period, Schoenmakers ended it to give Laurier the victory and the extra point in the standings.

The Warriors will now head east next weekend for a pair of interdivision games, as they visit the Queen's Gaels on Friday, October 28 and the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday, October 29.
