Box Score After giving up five power play goals in 20 chances over their first two games, the Waterloo Warriors were able to put together a perfect penalty killing game against the Western Mustangs on Friday night. Unfortunately, so were the Mustangs – and that might have been the difference on the scoreboard.
Waterloo went 0-6 on the man-advantage, and the Mustangs were able to contain the Warriors offense in a 3-1 Western victory at Thompson Arena in London.
Luke Karaim and Robert Polesello scored even-strength goals, while Trent Ouelette added an empty netter to push Western's record to 2-1-0 on the year. Michael Siddall (St. Mary's) potted his first career CIS goal for the Warriors, who fall to 1-2-0 in 2016-17.
Both goaltenders were excellent when called upon, as Western's Greg Dodds turned aside 33 shots for the victory. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) was saddled with the tough-luck loss for Waterloo, making 31 saves on the evening.
Karaim opened up the scoring six minutes into the first, when he wired a gorgeous wrister to the top corner over Morrison's blocker side. Western followed up that goal with a clean penalty kill on a four-minute high-sticking penalty assessed to Dodds, carrying the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Mustangs doubled their lead in the second when Spencer Cobbold shook his check behind the net and connected with Polesello, who buried the one-timer to make it 2-0 after 40 minutes.
The Warriors made a statement early in the third, as Siddall buried a rebound on the doorstep to earn his milestone tally. The Warriors continued to press in the third, outshooting Western 13-10, but they couldn't find the equalizer. The Ouelette goal with 20 seconds left sealed the victory for the Mustangs.
The Warriors will now look forward to returning home again on October 20, where they'll host the Brock Badgers. Game time is slated for 7pm at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
