Warriors win streak snapped by Hawks in battle of Waterloo

Box Score Photo by: Kha Vo

The Waterloo women's hockey team four game win streak was snapped by the Laurier Golden Hawks in a 2-1 loss Saturday night at the Waterloo Memorial Rec Complex.  The always stingy battle of Waterloo was nothing short of that as Laurier scored at the 14:29 minute mark of the third period and Waterloo could not find the equalizer in the remaining five minutes.

It was a big three points for Laurier who jumped into sixth spot (33 points) in the OUA standings while Waterloo dropped one spot into third with their 35 points.  Everyone continues to chase the No. 1 team in the country, Guelph who has 46 points on the year.

The Hawks opened the scoring late in the opening frame as Haley Baxter got one past Warrior keeper Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia).  The score would remain 1-0 for Laurier until midway in the third period when Alison Hanson (Toronto) netted her fourth of the season for the Warriors.  Hannah Street (Shoal Lake) picked up the lone helper.

The Hawks regained their lead five minutes later as Cassandra Calabrese put the home side back out front and they would hold on for the victory.  Bouwhuis turned aside 20 shots in the loss while Laurier goalie Amanda Smith was a little busier having to make 24 stops.

Waterloo will be back in action on Saturday at the CIF in an important tilt with the Toronto Varsity Bllues.  Puck drop is set for 2pm.
