Warriors struggle to find hoop in loss to Mustangs

Box Score Story by: Martin Timmerman

The Waterloo Warriors had a frustrating shooting night, hitting under 30% of shots, en route to a 65-46 loss to the visiting Western Mustangs on Wednesday night.

Waterloo scored the first basket of the game, a three by Dylan Phillips (Hamilton), but then went cold the rest of the quarter and were behind 22-10 after the opening period. Shooting just 21% to Western's 57% was the beginning of a long evening. Waterloo did improve their shooting and defense in the second, enjoyed a one point advantage in the second quarter, but trailed at half time 36-25.

The third quarter was much like the first in that Waterloo opened with a three, but then were out-scored 18-8 for the quarter. The Western lead was over 20 points and nothing was falling for Waterloo.

The fourth saw both teams struggle to close out the game. At one point both coaches wanted a timeout call when the other team scored, and nobody could score for over 2 minutes. There were 3 minutes left and still a 20 point margin.

Waterloo had only a single player in double figures, Dylan Phillips (Hamilton) with 10 points. Waterloo did out-rebound the Mustangs by a 39-32 margin led by Mike Pereira (Kitchener) with 16 rebounds. Pereira is second in the country with 12.3 rebounds per game.

Western was led by Anthony Spiridis with 22 points and Greg Morrow with 20.

Next game for Waterloo is Saturday afternoon as they travel to Windsor. Game time is 1:00pm and can be seen on oua.tv.
