The Waterloo men's baseball team went 3-1 in weekend play sweeping aside the McMaster Marauders at home and splitting their road games with the Guelph Gryphons.
In Waterloo's opening game at Jack Couch on Saturday the Warriors opened up the bottom of the first with three runs and didn't look back as they added two more in the fourth and three more in the seventh to pick up the 8-5 win.Â
At the plate
Michael Clouthier (Guelph) continue his hot bat with three hits and two RBI's while
Kyle Balzereit (Brantford),
Donald Smith (Waterloo ),
Haydon Friesen (Altona), and
Erik Werner (Burlington) each had two. Balzereit also crossed the plate twice and added a walk. On the mound
Brandon Semus (Windsor) improved to 2-1 pitching six innings while giving up three hits and striking out five.Â
Austin Coles (Ancaster) picked up the save sitting down three straight Marauders with one strikeout.
In the next game, the hot Warrior bats continued as the black and gold mercied the Marauders 14-4 in six innings of play. The win was Waterloo's fourth straight.
Clouthier had another three hit game while adding three RBI's while Balzereit and Smith had two RBI's each.Â
Chris Bombino (Guelph) also had a standout game at the plate with two hits, a walk and an RBI.Â
Alexandre Lojko (Barrie) went the distance allowing just four hits over six innings.
The Warriors were looking for their fifth straight win in their first of two at Guelph on Sunday and got a brilliant effort on the mound by third year starter
Ryne Weppler (Walkerton) against a very strong Gryphons team. Weppler pitched a complete game shutout allowing just five hits in nine innings as Waterloo blanked Guelph 2-0, handing the home side their first loss of the season.
Unfortunately for the Warriors their winning streak would come to an end in the back end of their double header with Guelph as the Gryphons topped the Warriors 13-3.
Waterloo is now 7-3 on the season and sit comfortably in third spot in the OUA standings with 14 points. Guelph is in first with 18 points while Brock is two back with 16.
