Box Score The Warriors could not stop the powerhouse McMaster Marauders as the No. 1 team in the country cruised to the 3-0 (18, 20, 21) win over Waterloo for their third straight OUA title. The good news however is that with Waterloo's win in the previous game, the black and gold had already clinched a spot at the CIS Championship next week in Saskatoon.
The top team in Canada very much looked the part from the opening whistle on Saturday, coming out swinging to put Waterloo on the back foot early. The middle combination of
Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines) and
Jordan McConkey (Stratford) was doing all it could to keep Waterloo competitive, but side-out volleyball was not enough given their early deficit, and Waterloo dropped the first set by a seven-point margin.
Much of the same continued into the second set as Waterloo struggled to find their attack while McMaster remained consistent led by Jori Mantha who was solid all game long. He would finish the contest with a game high 16 kills.
The third set saw Waterloo change up their attack and it seemed to work as they stayed even with the home side throughout but the top squad flexed their muscles in the late going as they provided separation to take the set 25-21 and match 3-0.
Waterloo's hitting leader was fifth year middle
Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines) who had nine kills in the contest. Dyck also led the way in the blocking category with three. From the outside
Aidan Simone (London) and
Zachary Doherty (Goderich) finished with eight kills each while
Gibson Graham (Markham) collected 33 assists in the loss.
Adding to the attack by Mantha for the Marauders was Danny Demyaneko who put away eight kills and added three blocks. All-star setter Austin Campion-Smith was solid in the game with 41 assists.
The Warriors will now await their national championship seeding information and game time for Thursday in Saskatoon. Follow @WlooWarriors for all updates at the CIS Championship.
