Box Score It wasn't exactly the way the Waterloo women's hockey team saw their final game of the season going down in a 7-1 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks but when they look back on the season as a whole, the Warriors should be very proud.
Shaun Reagan and his team had one of the most successful seasons in the history of the program and despite missing the playoffs by one point, they competed with each and every team in the OUA the entire way.
Waterloo finished with an 11-9-4 record and 26 points, just one back of Ryerson and Nipissing who both snuck into the post-season as OUA women's hockey has shown once again it is one of the most competitive leagues across the country.
In the game itself, Laurier opened the scoring in the 13
th minute as Jessie Hurrell scored one of her two goals with a shorthanded marker. The Hawks added five more in the second period, chasing rookie sensation
Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) from the net.
In the third period, Reagan had no choice but to gamble playing most of the period with an extra attacker and it paid off in the early going as Waterloo's
Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver) batted home a rebound.
Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove) and senior
Nicole Ballantyne (Toronto), playing in her final game as a Warrior, picked up the helpers.
It would be too little too late for Waterloo however, as Laurier added two more into the empty net to seal the victory by a score of 7-1. Tammy Freiburger also netted two goals for the visitors while netminder Amanda Smith stopped 29 of 30 shots faced. Sluys allowed four goals on 15 shots while
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was solid in relief, turning aside 15 of 16 shots.
"It just wasn't our day today. They were getting all the bounces and we couldn't dig ourselves out of a big hole," mentioned
Shaun Reagan. "I am extremely proud of the season we had and over the next couple of weeks we will try not to dwell on this final result, rather the positive strides we made as program this season."
