Box Score The men's basketball team had a tough draw in their season opening game, battling the No. 6 team in the country, Western Mustangs. A slow start hindered the black and gold and they could not recover as they fell by a score of 90-69 in the road contest.
Waterloo got off to a slow and sloppy start as Western took a 19-5 lead. The Warriors offence came alive in the second quarter as they would put up 21 points but found themselves down 44-26 at half. The Warriors stuck with the Mustangs the rest of the way but the deficit was too much to overcome in the end.
Jon Ravenhorst (Sarnia) was a beast for the Warriors with a game high 29 points in his 38 minutes of action. Ravenhorst hit six 3-pointers and also went 7-for-9 from the free throw line. He also had a strong night on the boards with five offensive rebounds and five defensive.
Ben Davis (Mississauga) also chipped in on the offence with 12 points while
Mike Pereira (Kitchener) had nine and
Dylan Phillips (Hamilton) eight. The Warriors could only muster nine points from the bench, proving to be the difference.
For Western, Greg Morrow used his large frame to put up 27 points, going 11-for-14 from the field while knocking down 5-of-6 from the line. Peter Scholtes chipped in with 18 points while Anthony Spiridis tallied 15 off the bench.
The Warriors will look to regroup when
Justin Gunter makes his head coaching debut on home court as the Windsor Lancers come to town on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3pm in the PAC and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
