No. 1 Gryphons snap Warriors win streak in tight affair

Box Score The Waterloo women's hockey team fell to the number one team in the country, Guelph by a score of 3-2 on Thursday night in Guelph.  The loss ended Waterloo's five game winning streak while the Gryphons extended their win streak to eight.  Guelph scored with four minutes remaining in the final frame which ended up being the game's winning tally.

Waterloo will finish 2015 with a very respectable 8-4-1 record, good for fourth in the OUA with 23 points while Guelph sits atop the OUA with 28 points.

The Gryphons took a 2-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes as Mallory Young scored her first of the season at the 6:02 mark while Averi Nooren netted her eighth of the season just five minutes later.

The score would remain the same until the opening seconds of the third period as Paula LaGamba (Toronto) potted her team leading eighth of the season.  Marissa Redmond (Ajax) and Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) collected the assists on the goal.  LaGamba and McDonell now both have 12 points on the season, good enough for the third most in the OUA.

Waterloo continued to press but couldn't find the equalizer and Guelph took advantage as Jessica Pinkerton provided insurance for Guelph at 16:06 of the third,  The never-say-die Warriors did make it a one goal game once again as Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove) fired home an absolute lazer of one-timer on a nice pass by Michelle Tanel (Toronto) but that is as close as the black and gold would come.

Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) was solid in net for the Warriors stopping 21 of 24 shots while Valerie Lamenta allowed just two goals on 19 shots.

Waterloo will enter the holiday break with confidence and will use their New Years tournment (Jan.2/3) as a way to stay fresh heading into 2016.  Their first regular season contest of 2016 goes Sunday, January 10 against the Badgers on home ice.
