Tamed: Warriors snap skid; beat Lions

Box Score

Just over a year ago, the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team broke a lengthy losing skid, and immediately rattled off nine consecutive victories. After Friday night's streak-snapper in North York, they're hoping history repeats itself.

A trio of Warriors notched two points apiece, and Mike Morrison (Hamilton) made 35 saves as the Warriors stopped their four-game slide with a 4-1 win over the 10th-ranked York Lions on Friday night.

Daniel Perigo (Truro) and Phillip Fife (Oromocto) each registered a goal and an assist, while captain Joe Underwood (Canton) added a pair of helpers for the Warriors. Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge) and Mike Moffat (Waterloo) also found the back of the net for Waterloo, who improved to 5-8-0 with their first victory since October 31.

For the Lions, it was just their second loss in regulation this season. Trevor Peterson scored for York, while Chris Perugini turned away 25 shots in a losing cause. Former Warriors great Justin Larson (Buckhorn), now in grad school at York, added an assist in his first game against Waterloo.

The Warriors jumped on the Lions early, outshooting them 15-9 in the first period. Sonnenburg opened the scoring when he tipped in a goalmouth feed from Perigo, and then Perigo added to the lead with a beautiful wrister to the top shelf to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The Lions took back-to-back penalties in the opening 1:06 of the second period, and the Warriors made them pay on the two-man advantage. After some solid puck movement, Moffat slid in from his position on the point to convert a back door feed from Andrew Smith (Kitchener), making it 3-0 Warriors.

The Lions cut the lead to 3-1 with just over 6 minutes left in the third, but that's the closest they'd come. Fife added an empty net tally in the closing seconds to round out the scoring.

The Warriors will now look to string together back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they return home next weekend for a pair of games on Alumni weekend. First up is the Windsor Lancers, who will visit Waterloo next Friday, November 27 at 7pm.
