Box Score Facing one of the OUA's top teams on the road, the Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team had a chance to make a statement on Saturday afternoon in Toronto.
Consider the statement made.
Paula LaGamba (Toronto) scored twice, including the game winner just over a minute in to overtime to give the Warriors a 3-2 victory over the second-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues.
The victory was Waterloo's third straight, and it moves them to fourth in the OUA with 18 points – just two shy of the Blues' total. Sandwiched between LaGamba's pair was a game-tying goal from Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine), who found the equalizer on a power play late in the third period. Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) turned aside 27 shots in the victory.
Toronto got goals from Julia Szulewska and Kiyono Cox in their second straight defeat, after starting the season with 7 straight wins. Valencia Yordanov made 24 saves for Toronto in a losing cause.
The teams exchanged goals in the first period, but Cox's marker early in the second gave Toronto a slim advantage. While the defensively stalwart Blues looked to make that goal hold up as the winner, the Warriors power play made them pay when McDonell slipped a wrister in past Yordanov with just 2:11 left to tie the game.
In overtime, the Warriors took advantage of the open ice when LaGamba and Michelle Tanel (Toronto) broke in on a 2-on-1. LaGamba fielded Tanel's feed in front and roofed a backhander to give Waterloo its biggest victory of the season.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, November 21 when they face the Brock Badgers, before hosting the battle of Waterloo against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, November 22.
