Box Score The Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team looked to start their three-game road trip on a positive note. But the UOIT Ridgebacks had other ideas.
Jason Shaw had a goal and an assist, and Brendan O'Neill made 29 saves as the Ridgebacks topped the Warriors 3-2 on Friday night in Oshawa.
Joey Champigny (East Angus) and Phillip Fife (Oromocto) scored for the Warriors, while Chris Hurry (Summerland) made 20 stops in a losing cause. The defeat is Waterloo's third straight, and it drops them to 4-7-0 on the season. Meanwhile, the Ridgebacks got goals from Shaw, Alex Derlis, and Ben Blasko, improving their record to 6-3-1.
Even though UOIT got on the board first with Derlis' 2nd of the season just 5 minutes into the contest, the Warriors dominated play in the first period – they outshot the Ridgebacks 15-3 in the opening frame. And they were eventually rewarded for their persistence twice before the first intermission – first, Champigny found twine for his first career CIS goal, and then Fife added one to make it 2-1 Waterloo after 20 minutes.
The Ridgebacks knotted things up less than three minutes into the second with a goal from Shaw, and then took the lead for good in the opening minutes of the third period, courtesy of Blasko.
The Warriors will now look to snap their skid on Saturday afternoon in Montreal, when they face the OUA-best McGill Redmen in Montreal. Puck drop is slated for 5pm.
