Warriors edged by Mustangs in season opener

Box Score The women's hockey team put together a strong 60 minutes of play in their OUA season opener on Sunday in London but fell just short dropping the game 1-0 to the defending CIS champions, Western Mustangs.  A power play goal at 13:09 of the second period was all the Mustangs needed to pick up their first win of the season.

Fifth year netminder Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was remarkable in between the pipes stopping 38 of 39 shots faced while Kelly Campbell was less busy at the other end stopping all 21 shots faced for the shutout.

Western's goal came off the stick of Brianna Iazzolino on a Lindsey McDonald (Ajax) penalty in the second period.  The Mustangs had most of thier qualiity chances throughout the middle frame but Bouwhuis kept the black and gold in the contest.

Waterloo came out firing in the third in search of the equalizer with quality chances coming from Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) and Paula LaGama with under five minutes to play but they were unable to solve Campbell.

The Warriors will be back in action next weekend as they make the road trip up to North Bay and Sudbury to battle Nipissing and Laurentian.  Waterloo will take to the ice for their home opener on Saturday, October 17 against Windsor.
