Warriors down Redeemer Royals in exhibition play

The Waterloo Warriors made their first ever visit to Redeemer University College in Ancaster for the fall opener and came home with a 92-78 win.

The Warriors started quickly, building early leads of 7-0 and 13-5 before Redeemer recovered somewhat and Waterloo held just a two point 20-18 lead after the first quarter. Waterloo had trouble finding the inside of the basket during the second quarter and Redeemer had their largest lead of the game at 31-27 with about 4 minutes remaining in the half. That deficit started a Waterloo comeback and a 23-6 run to end the first half and start the second. The double digit lead held for most of the remainder of the game, although Redeemer did narrow the lead to just five points briefly.

Waterloo consistently found their way to the basket on penetrations, but were not as consistent on converting the layups, hitting just 45% of field goal attempts. Waterloo did hold a 41-29 rebounding edge, with Muhammed Anwar leading the way with 8.

Waterloo spread the scoring around, with six players reaching double figures. Jon Ravenhorst (Sarnia) led the way with 14 points and Mike Pereira (Kitchener), Kristian Vande Kemp (Rockwood), Dylan Phillips (Hamilton) and Ahmed Ismail (Toronto) each scored 13. Phillips started at guard and handled the majority of the point guard duties. Redeemer was led by Oliver McMayoni with 18 and Nathan DiLoreto with 15 points.

Next action for Waterloo is a home exhibition contest against the Dalhousie Tigers from Halifax. Game time is 8:00pm on Friday, October 9. The Tigers were Atlantic University Sport champions last season and participated in the CIS Final 8.
