Box Score Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) earned her 8th career shutout and three different Warriors scored as the women's hockey team shutout the visiting York Lions 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the CIF arena.
Waterloo scored a single goal in each period and played sound defence in what was their third win of the season. The Warriors sit at 3-2-1, good for sixth spot in the OUA while the Lions dropped to 1-4-0 which has them in 11th.
Michelle Tanel (Toronto) got the Warriors on the board early in the contest with a seeing eye point shot that eluded York keeper Megan Lee.
Lindsey McDonald (Ajax) and
Tegan Odland (Enchant) picked up the helpers on what was the first career CIS goal for the stay-at-home defenceman Tanel.
Waterloo padded their lead midway through the second frame as
Paula LaGamba (Toronto) was the recipient of a nice pass by captain
Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) and fired it into the top corner past Lee's glove. The chance was created off a bad clearing attempt by the keeper and Waterloo would head into the second break up by two.
The Warriors showed their sound defensive system off for the remaining 20 minutes while
Alison Hanson (Toronto) would ice the game sliding one into the empty net to make it a 3-0 final.
Sluys turned aside 23 shots in the game while Lee allowed two goals on 28 shots.
Waterloo will be back in action with two more home games next weekend as they battle the Queen's Gaels on Saturday and UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday. Both games are slated for a 2:30pm start.
