Lancers get past Warriors in season finale

A year ago, the Waterloo Warriors football team went on the road in the season's final week and avoided a winless season with a big road victory. This year, the Windsor Lancers made sure that history did not repeat itself.

The Lancers scored 29 points in the first half, en route to a 44-14 win over the Warriors on the final week of OUA action on Saturday afternoon in Windsor.

Lancers pivot Casey Wright threw for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns for Windsor, while receiver Nate O'Halloran caught a pair of majors. Graduating senior Ryan Di Risio (Burlington) led the offense for the Warriors, rushing 28 times for 110 yards and a touchdown in his final career OUA appearance.

Waterloo rookie quarterback Jordan Cernanec (St. Thomas) completed only 4 of 12 passes for 51 yards and a pair of interceptions – one of which was returned for a touchdown by Windsor's Matt Gayer. The loss ensured the Warriors would finish without a win for the first time since 2011.

Brendan Conway (Burlington) anchored the Waterloo defense with 7.5 tackles, while Paul Kaija (Sarnia) added a pair of sacks for the black and gold.

The Warriors and head coach Chris Bertoia will now turn their attention to the future, as they hit the recruiting trail in the offseason.
