Warriors tame Lions in four sets

Aaron Wiersma had 8 kills and 3 service aces in Waterloo's afternoon win over York

Box Score The Waterloo men's volleyball team emerged victorious for the second time in 2015 with a 3-1 win over the host York Lions. The Warriors took the opening two sets (27-25, 25-15) before dropping a tight third set 28-26. The Warriors would find a way to shift the momentum back in their favour in the fourth set topping the Lions 25-23 for the win.

With the victory, Waterloo moves into sole possession of fourth place with a 9-5 record while York sits in a tie for sixth at 7-6 on the season.

Second year middle Jordan McConkey (Stratford) was an integral part of Waterloo's attack leading the team in points with 17. The science and business major did so on nine kills, nine blocks (3 solo) and two service aces. Veteran outside hitter Zachary Doherty (Goderich) was also on his game with 11 kills for the black and gold.

Rounding out Waterloo's attack was Aidan Simone (London) with nine kills while Aaron Wiersma (St. Catharines) added eight. Wiersma also closed out the match with two straight service aces with the match even at 23's to give Waterloo the win.

Defensively Erich Woolley (New Dundee) was up to his old tricks with 12 digs while Doherty added 10. Woolley's 159 digs on the season has him second overall in the OUA while as a team the Warriors are atop the leaderboard with 599. Setting up the Warriors all game long was Gibson Graham (Markham) who finished with 38 assists.

For York it was Ray Szeto who provided much of the offence with 21 points in a losing effort.

Waterloo will hope to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to North Bay to take on Nipissing tomorrow afternoon.
