Warriors steal two against Gaels in opening weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Warriors opened up their OUA season against the Queen's Gaels on Sunday after their double-header against Guelph was cancelled yesterday. Waterloo opened the season on dominating fashion, winning 14-4 and 7-1 to move to 2-0 on the season.

Game #1:

For the third straight season, OUA veteran pitcher Adam Lentz (Calgary/) was handed the ball to open the Warriors season and he did not disappoint. Lentz threw 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 3 strikeouts to earn the win. Second year CF Kyle Balzereit (Brantford/) and reigning UW and OUA Rookie of the Year Michael Clouthier (Guelph/) both had big games for the Warriors. Both Balzereit and Clouthier notched a single, double, homerun, and 3 runs scored. Clouthier added 3 RBIs and a stolen base while Balzereit knocked in 4 runs and stole 2 bags. Fifth year SS Nolan Pettipiece (Burlington/) scored 3 runs while second year OF Kyle Thalheimer (Richmond Hill/) scored twice.

Game #2:

The quality starting pitching continued for the Warriors in game two as second year SP Ryne Weppler (Walkerton/) threw 6 strong innings for the win, allowing only one unearned run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts. Weppler didn't allow his first hit until the 5th inning. 4th year P/DH Ben Tinklin (Kitchener/) came on in relief to finish the game, striking out the side. Balzereit continued his strong day at the plate as he went 2-4 with a double, one stolen base and two runs scored. 4th year OF Mike Gatchene (Kitchener/) added 2 hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Field Manager Tim Pegg said after the games, "I thought we swung the bats really well today. We were patient and didn't expand. We put good swings on the ball when it was in our zone. Getting strong starting pitching is a key as well, and I thought Albi and Rhino did a great job changing speeds. I'm excited about our team this year. Next week will be a big test for us."

The Warriors are visiting Laurier next Saturday afternoon at Bechtel Park in the battle of Waterloo, and then travel to St. Catharines to take on Brock on Sunday. Both games begin at 12:00 pm.
