Men's tennis sweep Carleton, fall to McGill and Toronto

Another busy weekend was one of mixed results for the Warriors as they hosted McGill and Carleton and traveled to Scarborough on Sunday to play the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Warriors swept Carleton but fell to McGill and Toronto.

They faced the McGill Redmen on Friday and as in years past, had a tough time in achieving a positive result. In doubles, the no. 2 team of Joe Zeng (Markham) and Nate Flach (Toronto) were overwhelmed losing 1-8 and no. 3 team of Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) and Kamil Ladhani (West Vancouver) found their stride a little too late going down 5-8 after being 0-4 down.  Only no.1 pair of Vincent Chan (Markham) and John Chan (Whistler), last year's OUA doubles champions managed a win. This was the first time in the season the pair had played together. They remain unbeaten as a team since pairing up last season.

In singles, only no.1 V. Chan and no. 2 Joe Zeng (Markham) managed to secure wins –V. Chan in two sets and Zeng in three very close sets. John Chan (Whistler) suffered his first loss in the regular season since joining the Warriors when he lost a tense match in the third set super tie-break. Last year's OUA Rookie of the year, Chan dropped the tie-break 6-10. The tie-break was played instead of a full set when no. 5 Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) went down 2-6,2-6 for McGill to secure the win. Rookie no. 4 Flach lost another nail-biter in three sets.   The rookie has been playing consistent tennis throughout the season.

On Saturday the Warriors hosted Carleton, the newest team to join the OUA league. With both teams feeling the effects of a punishing match schedule and travel, the teams agreed to play the singles round first and to play the doubles only if necessary. As it turned out the Warriors swept all six singles with only no. 1 Joe Zeng (Markham) having to tough out three sets against a very skilled counter-puncher.  All credit to Zeng for changing his tactics after dropping the first set 2-6.   It was a high quality match that was well played by both combatants.

The Warriors hit the road on Sunday morning to play Toronto at the university's Scarborough campus. This promised to be a tough match for the Warriors as not only a third place finish in the regular season was on the line, but more importantly, an advantageous position for seeding purposes for next weekend's OUA Championships in London being hosted by Western U.

The Warriors had a demoralizing start when all three doubles teams were completely outplayed. They were able to redeem themselves in singles but only to manage a 3-3 tie. The loss of the doubles point was once again to be the downfall as it gave the Blues the 4-3 overall win. Joe Zeng (Markham), John Chan (Whistler) and Kamil Ladhani (West Vancouver) gave Waterloo their three points. Zeng had a relatively easy time winning in two sets, Chan battled poor form at the beginning but persevered to end strongly and Ladhani made short work of his normally consistent Blues opponent. All credit to Ladhani as he played one of his better matches of the season.

The Warriors head to London next weekend to participate in the season ending OUA championships October 3, 4, 5th.
