The Warriors began a busy and successful weekend winning all three matches on their schedule. It began on a road trip to Oshawa on Friday against the OUIT Ridgebacks, York Lions on Saturday and back home on Sunday to host the McMaster Marauders.
The match on Friday evening against OUIT began with the six singles of which four were won by Waterloo. The Warriors were without the services of their two top players
Joe Zeng (Markham) and
Vincent Chan (Markham) but those who played were more than up to the task.
Having already secured the win, Waterloo forfeited the doubles point due to time constraints. The two matches lost by Waterloo were by the narrow margins. Captain
Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) playing at no. 3 lost 13-15 in the third set tie-break and rookie
Kamil Ladhani (West Vancouver) also lost in the third set tie-break 8-10. Rookie
Daniel Ben Yona (Toronto) had a successful debut winning his match easily.
On Saturday, the Warriors faced challenges other than those posed by their opponents. The matches were played outdoors in sunny and windy conditions; very different from the climate-controlled indoor conditions at home. Despite the conditions, the Warriors started well winning the doubles point. Â No. 2 doubles pair of
John Chan (Whistler) and
Thomas Lee (Calgary) playing for the first time as a team was able to battle for an 8-5 win after being down a break earlier in the set. Follis and Ladhani at no. 3 clinched the doubles point when they won 8-4. No. 1 team of Chan and
Nate Flach (Toronto) lost 5-8.
Chan quickly made up for his doubles loss by winning his singles match easily 6-1, 6-1 but his doubles partner Flach lost a hard-fought contest 6-2, 6-7, 6-7.  Two more Warriors went down but Ladhani emerged victorious at no. 6 making it a 3-3 score. The deciding match was fought between no. 2 Chan and Pranav Yardi in what turned out to be the match of the day. Chan won the first set 7-6 but dropped the second 6-7 after being up 4-1 at one point. He stormed back to take the final set 6-1 to give the Warriors a 4-3 win.
Back home on Sunday and on familiar ground, the Warriors scored their biggest win of the season so far beating the Marauders 6-1. Waterloo won the doubles point with wins at no. 1 and no. 3. The Warriors then went on to win five of the singles matches, all of them in two sets. Matt Holland, brother of Warrior Nicole Holland of the women's tennis team, was the sole winner for the Marauders.
The Warriors will have another busy weekend coming up when they host McGill on Friday, Carleton on Saturday and travel to Toronto to play the Blues Sunday. Â
