Box Score 2 The Waterloo Warriors might have missed their first opportunity to officially clinch an OUA playoff spot, but a spirited third-period comeback put them on solid ground heading into the season's final weekend.
The Warriors claimed three of an available four points this past weekend, skating past the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 on Saturday afternoon before storming back to force overtime in an eventual 5-4 extra time defeat to the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday.
The 1-0-1 weekend moves the Warriors to 8-9-5, good for 21 points on the season and 8
th place in the OUA. The Brock Badgers are the only team that can catch Waterloo for the conference's last playoff spot, but they now sit four points back of the Warriors with only two games to play.
On Saturday afternoon versus the Lakers, a trio of Warriors – forward
Marissa Redmond (Ajax/) and defencemen
Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove/) and
Michelle Tanel (Toronto/) – each recorded a pair of points in the 3-0 victory. The Warriors were able to wear down the understaffed Lakers, who dressed only 13 forwards for the game, as Waterloo owned the play (and the shot clock) for the game's final 40 minutes.
The Warriors did most of their damage in the middle frame, as Lindsay Ceasar opened the scoring on a power play midway through the second before Digness scored in the period's final two minutes. Waterloo outshot Nipissing 14-3 in the second stanza, which became increasingly chippy and penalty-filled as time wore on.
The third period saw the Lakers cut a familiar path back to the penalty box, as the visitors took five straight minor penalties in the period's first 12 minutes. Nipissing's most dire penalty kill situation was a 5-on-3 just past the period's six-minute mark, but the Warriors made sure it didn't last long. Just eight seconds into the two-man advantage, Redmond found the back of the net to make it 3-0 Waterloo.
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) made 20 saves for her second shutout of the season.
In a wild affair a day later, the Warriors stormed back from a 4-2 third period deficit only to fall in overtime to the Voyageurs 5-4.
Rachel Marriott (Waterloo/) led the charge for the Warriors with a goal and three assists, while Ceasar added three points and Digness pitched in with a goal and an assist.
Jessica Staats was the overtime hero for the Voyageurs, completing the hat trick with the game-winning goal. Amanda Pereira earned a helper on the OT marker for her fourth assist of the afternoon.
After a first period that ended 1-1, goals came fast and furious in the middle stanza. After the teams traded power play goals in the period's first seven minutes, the Voyageurs rattled off two more goals to take a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Just as it looked like the third period would wane away on the Warriors, Marriott scored on the man-advantage to draw the Warriors within a goal. Then, with less than five minutes to play, Digness added a power play marker to tie the game at 4-4 after regulation.
The Voyageurs secured the extra point when Staats beat Bouwhuis just over a minute into the extra frame.
The Warriors will now look to secure their playoff position on the road this weekend, as they'll round out their schedule against the Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, respectively. Any combination of one point in those two games, or a Brock loss this weekend will punch Waterloo's postseason ticket.
