Box Score The Waterloo Warriors might not have won their game against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night, but they sure found some momentum heading into the biggest game of the year.
Down 4-0 at one point, the Warriors stormed back to tie the game in the third before the Thunderwolves edged out a 6-4 win in Thunder Bay.
Elsewhere on Friday night, the Windsor Lancers beat the York Lions 3-1 in York's final game of the season, setting up a win-and-in scenario for the Warriors in their season finale against Lakehead Saturday night.
Mike Hammond scored twice and added three assists for Lakehead in the win, contributing on every goal except the Wolves' empty-netter in the third.
Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) and
Tyler Norrie (Simcoe/) each scored twice for Waterloo, while
Joe Underwood (Canton/),
Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) and
Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge/) pitched in with two assists each.
Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) took the loss in the Warriors net, kicking away 25 shots. Jeff Bosch made 24 stops in the Wolves net.
Lakehead jumped to a quick two-goal lead early in the first period, as Luke Maw scored 4-on-4 and Hammond scored on a power play just 26 seconds apart. Hammond added his second of the game late in the frame to make it 3-0 for the Wolves after the first period.
After David Quesnele extended the Lakehead lead to 4-0 midway through the second, the Warriors needed a goal before the end of the frame to get themselves back in the contest. With under a minute to play, Norrie stepped up and smacked one past Bosch to make the score 4-1 after 40 minutes.
The Wolves took back-to-back minors within the first two minutes of the third, and Larson made them pay. With the Warriors on a two-man advantage, he scored on a rocket one-timer to make it 4-2, before adding another power play marker just over a minute later to make it 4-3.
Norrie evened the score at 4-4 just past the 6-minute mark. But the tie was short-lived, as Kellin Ainsworth scored the eventual game-winner just over a minute later. Ainsworth added an empty-netter in the game's final minute to salt the game away.
The deadlocked OUA West Division now boils down to the final day of league play, where a Warriors win over Lakehead will clinch a playoff spot. Puck drop from the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay is slated for 7:30pm.
