Box Score The Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team erased two different deficits on Saturday afternoon, but for the Windsor Lancers, the third lead was the charm.
The visiting Lancers scored three times in the third period, burying the resilient Warriors 5-3 at the Columbia Icefield Arena on Saturday.
The loss drops the Warriors to 1-2-3 on the season, while the Lancers stay undefeated in regulation at 5-0-1.
Candice Chevalier scored twice for Windsor, and
Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) answered with a pair for the Warriors. Three other Lancers registered two-point performances in the win.
The Warriors found themselves down early in the game, as Jenny MacKnight put the Lancers up 1-0 just over two minutes in. Chevalier doubled the Windsor lead before the game was 11 minutes old, but McDonell gave some momentum back to the home team when she made the score 2-1 in the final minute of the first.
That momentum carried into the second period when 2014 CIS All-Rookie team defenceman
Stephanie Digness (Aldergrove) cashed for her first of the year on a power play, evening the score at 2-2. That was the only goal of the tight-checking middle frame, as each team managed only 6 shots in the second.
The Lancers broke the tie less than two minutes into the third, when Larissa Borowiec beat Warriors goaltender
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) to make it 3-2 Windsor. McDonell once again forced a tie when she beat Lancers keeper Marissa Kozovski, but the Warriors couldn't hold the fort to force overtime.
The Lancers came in waves in the final stanza, outshooting the Warriors 15-4 in the final 20 minutes. Chevalier finally broke through for the eventual game-winner at the 11:07 mark, and Erinn Noseworthy added an empty-netter to salt the victory away.
The Warriors will now turn their attention to the Western Mustangs, who come to town on Sunday afternoon. Puck drop is slated for 2:30 pm at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
