Campbell shuts out Warriors

Stephanie Sluys was solid, but Western's Kelly Campbell outduelled her in the Mustangs' 3-0 win on Sunday.
Box Score

The Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team had all the momentum, the bulk of the scoring chances, and a half-dozen power play opportunities against the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon. But the Mustangs had Kelly Campbell.

Campbell, arguably the top goaltender in the country, made 25 saves for her first shutout of the season as the Mustangs topped the Warriors 3-0 at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.

Kendra Broad had a goal and an assist, including the eventual game-winning marker only 1:06 into the second period. Stacey Scott and Emma Pearson also scored goals for the Mustangs, who won their fifth straight game and move to 6-1-0 overall.

Rookie goaltender Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) stopped 16 shots in the loss for the Warriors. Waterloo's winless streak was extended to five games, as they fell to 1-3-3 on the season.

Campbell, who will represent Canada at the Winter Universiade games in Italy in December, was the story of the afternoon. She was her team's best penalty killer, as Waterloo was 0-for-6 on the power play, and she was key to holding the opening 20 minutes scoreless when the Warriors outshot Western 8-5. For the sixth time in 6 starts this season, Campbell allowed two or fewer goals, and her save percentage climbed to a sparkling .947.

The Warriors will now look to end their four-game homestand on a successful note against a pair of schools from the provincial capital. On Saturday afternoon at 2pm, Waterloo will welcome the Ryerson Rams to town, before playing host to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm.
