Box Score The Waterloo Warriors opened their OUA season at home on Wednesday night, but came out on the short end of an 87-54 score to the visiting Ryerson Rams. Ryerson is ranked #3 in the country and had a 6-0 record against CIS teams in the pre-season.
Myles Charvis (Mississauga) led the Warriors with 23 points.
Waterloo found out early that it would be a challenging night as Ryerson started the game on a 15-2 run and never looked back. The outside shots were not falling on this night as Waterloo went 1 for 8 from the three point line in the first quarter. It was no easier inside as Ryerson was out-rebounding the Warriors 13-6.
The second quarter did not see much improvement as the Rams opened with an 11-2 run and had a 20 point lead midway through the frame. Ryerson played a solid team game and spread the scoring which led to four players collecting over 5 points by half time. The score at the half was 40-22 for Ryerson.
To start the second half, Waterloo played the Rams even for a while but faded in the end of the quarter as another run by Ryerson, this time an 11-2 run, give Ryerson a 30 point lead at the end of the third quarter. With plenty of substitutions in the final frame and a parade to the foul line, the Warriors made it close only for the final quarter. In the end, Ryerson had an easy 87-54 win.
The black and gold was led by one player was reached double figuresl that being Charvis with 23 points. The Warriors shot just 33% from the field compared to 44% for Ryerson. Despite all the missed shots, Waterloo snagged just 5 offensive rebounds as Ryerson held a 46-27 overall edge on the boards.
Ryerson played without Kadeem Green and Adika Peter-McNeilly, two of their key players. The Rams had four players in double figures, led by Jahmal Jones with 17 points and Jean-Victor Mukama with 15. Aaron Best had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The next game for Waterloo will be Friday night as they host the Toronto Varsity Blues. Game time is 8:00pm at the PAC and will be streamed on OUA.TV.
