Box Score When
Kain Allicock (Markham) started his CIS career over four years ago, he likely knew he'd do a lot of great things in front of raucous crowds at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
He just didn't think he'd be doing it while wearing black and gold.
Allicock, a former Golden Hawk before transferring to Waterloo in 2011, scored once and added an assist on the eventual game-winning goal to pace the Warriors to a 4-3 win over the Golden Hawks on Wednesday afternoon.
It was the second annual school day game between the Warriors and Golden Hawks, and over 2,900 local elementary school students saw Waterloo avenge their school day loss back in January.
Andrew Smith (Kitchener) added two points, and Waterloo got goals from
Matt Kennedy (Oro Medonte) and
Brett Mackie (Whitby) as they extended their winning streak to five games.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton) stayed hot in the Waterloo net, as he steered away 26 shots in the win. Laurier intramurals goaltender Harrison Pharoah, still filling in for a pair of injured Hawks goalies, made 37 saves in the loss. With the victory, the Warriors improve to 9-6-1 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 5-9-0.
The Warriors looked the more energetic of the two clubs when the puck dropped at the unusual time of 11am, but it was the host Golden Hawks who scored the only goal of the first period. Just over five minutes in, Laurier won an offensive zone faceoff and Zach Lorentz tipped a Matthew Franczyk point shot past Morrison for the 1-0 Hawks lead.
Allicock evened the score on the rush early in the second frame, when he beat Pharoah with a shot from a sharp angle. Smith then gave the Warriors their first lead of the game late in the period, when he capitalized on a breakaway, putting a wrister past the rookie Laurier goaltender's outstretched glove.
Kennedy extended the lead to 3-1 early in the third, as he slammed a rebound home off an
Anthony Tapper (Marmora) shot. The Hawks cut the lead down to one when the puck pinballed off a man in front and landed on the stick of Erik Pushka, who found the net to make it 3-2 midway through the final stanza.
With less than six minutes to play, Mackie drove hard to the net and tipped home a centering feed to restore the Waterloo two-goal lead in the closing seconds of a power play. The Hawks made it interesting when Luke Hietkamp got credit for a goal off a scramble in the crease, but the hosts were unable to find the equalizer late in the game.
The Warriors will now look to keep their winning streak alive against the province's top team, as they finish off the first half of the season with a road game against the division-leading Windsor Lancers on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm.
Notes: The Warriors went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Laurier went 0-for-2…
Paul Bonar (Brandon) returned to the lineup after missing two games…The Warriors have a power play goal in each game during their five-game winning streak.
