Box Score The Waterloo Warriors didn't have to wait for July 1 to see a spectacular fireworks display in Ottawa.
Forwards
Colin Behenna (Waterloo) and
Chris Chappell (Pickering) lit up the nation's capital with four points apiece, and the Warriors extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over the 8
th-ranked Carleton Ravens on Saturday night.
Reigning OUA male athlete of the week
Mike Morrison (Hamilton) remained hot, turning aside 43 shots in the win. The Warriors improved to 8-6-1 on the season, and they snapped the Ravens' nine-game winning streak in the process. Francis Dupuis made 21 saves for Carleton, who saw their record fall to 11-3-0.
Joe Underwood (Canton) and
Mike Moffat (Waterloo) added goals for the Warriors to go along with Behenna's pair. Joey West and Mitch Zion scored for Carleton, as the Warriors held off one of the most potent offensive attacks in the CIS.
Waterloo looked the sharper of the two clubs in the opening shifts of the game, but it was the host Ravens that got on the board first when West knocked a rebound past Morrison just under four minutes in. The lead was short-lived – 36 seconds, to be exact – as Chappell floated a gorgeous pass from the half-boards in front to a waiting Behenna, who beat Dupuis five-hole to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The visitors ratcheted up the pressure in the second, and Behenna made it 2-1 for Waterloo when he tipped a Moffat point shot past Dupuis. A slew of penalties saw the Warriors get a 4-on-3 power play late in the second, and Underwood took advantage of the extra space to cash on a wicked one-timer to make the score 3-1 Waterloo after two periods.
Moffat rounded out the scoring for the Warriors on another man-advantage in the third. Zion's goal with just under three minutes to play gave the Ravens some late hope, but they couldn't generate any rebounds off of Morrison in a flurry of shots over the game's final moments.
The Warriors will now turn their focus to the final two games of the fall term, and most immediate, to their cross-town rivals. The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks will host the Warriors in a special School Day game at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex on Wednesday morning at 11am.
Notes: The Warriors went 2-for-7 on the power play, while Carleton went 0-for-8…Chappell's four assists saw him take over the team lead in scoring with 18 points…The Warriors played with 13 forwards and 5 defencemen for the third straight game.
