In a rare Sunday afternoon contest, the Waterloo Warriors travelled to Kingston and exacted some revenge on the Queen's Gaels (3-4) as they defeated their rivals 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 25-27, 28-26) just 9 days after losing in straight sets to this same squad at home. Waterloo moves to 5-4 on the season and sit 5
th in the OUA standings with the victory.
Waterloo opened the scoring in the first set and the points went back and forth between the two teams until the 14-point mark when the Warriors pulled away to take the Gaels 25-15 and take an early 1-0 lead. Queen's had a slow start with their attacks being shut down by the Warriors strong defensive play and the black and gold took advantage to set the tone early.
Â
The Gaels trailed Waterloo throughout the entire second set and just when it seemed like the Warriors had the game in the bag, Queen's turned up the heat to close an eight-point gap down to one point at 24-23. Waterloo escaped with the 2
nd set victory as they finished with a kill from second year
Aaron Wiersma (St. Catharines) to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
In the third set Queen's Markus Trence opened the scoring for the Gaels off a kill catching Waterloo off guard. The Gaels came out challenging Waterloo's attacking capabilities with defensive blocks from Mike Tomlinson and Tyler Scheerhoorn. The scoring went back and forth with both teams holding their own in rallies but the Gaels managed to overtake Waterloo with an attacking error by a Warrior player to take the set 27-25 and force a fourth set.Â
Â
In the fourth frame, again the teams were neck and neck with neither side being able to pull away. Queen's had the opportunity to take the fourth set at game-point but Waterloo's
Zachary Doherty (Goderich) produced two back-to-back kills and an attacking error by Scheerhoorn ended the game for the evening 3-1 in favour of the Warriors.
Waterloo led a strong attack with five of their players getting over 10 kills each against the Gaels. The black and gold was led by
Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines) who had 12 kills, 7 digs and 8 blocks while
Jordan McConkey (Stratford) was dominate with 12 kills, 3 digs and 3 blocks.
Nikola Dimitrijevic (Mississauga) tallied 43 assists and 2 digs in the victory for the Warriors.
On the Gaels side of the ball, Tomlinson had the game-high of 16 kills and 10 digs, Trence came close with 15 kills and 12 digs for the Gaels and libero Ivo Dramov scored 20 digs.
Waterloo is back in action next Saturday, November 22 at 2pm in the PAC as they host the Toronto Varsity Blues. The game can be seen on OUA TV.
