Box Score The Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team had already waited 40 days for the chance to snap their seven-game losing streak and get back into the win column. So when Thursday night's game in Guelph went into overtime, their captain was tired of waiting.
Warriors captain
Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine) scored just 10 seconds into overtime and rookie
Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) made 30 saves for her second shutout of the season as Waterloo topped the sixth-ranked Guelph Gryphons 1-0 on Thursday night.
The win was Waterloo's first since October 4, and it improves their record to 2-5-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Gryphons fall to 5-1-2 on the season after the upset, as the Warriors enacted some revenge on last season's first-round playoff exit at the hands of Guelph.
The Warriors came out strong and were able to stick with the nation's sixth-ranked team in a scoreless first period, as shots were even at 8 apiece. However, the Gryphons stepped up their attack in the second, outshooting the Warriors by a 15-4 margin. Only Sluys' heroics held the game scoreless through 40 minutes, giving the visitors a chance to steal their first road win of the season.
When the tight-checking third period ended with still no score, it looked like a shootout was imminent. But McDonell had a different ending in mind.
After winning the opening faceoff, a Gryphons defenceman lost her footing, allowing the Waterloo captain to scoop up the puck just inside the Guelph zone. McDonell worked her way to the slot where her first shot was blocked, but she was able to deposit the rebound over the glove of Guelph keeper Stephanie Nehring for the game-winner.
The Warriors will now look to start a different kind of streak, as they look for their second consecutive road victory against the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop at the Seymour Hannah Centre in St. Catharine's is slated for 2:15 PM.
