Warriors slow start and finish prove costly in 67-60 loss vs York

Warriors Mike Pereira (Waterloo) and Jaspreet Gill (Oliver) hit consecutive threes late in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 58-58 against the York Lions, but the Waterloo Warriors were unable to take the lead. York closed out the game with a 9-2 run and won 67-60 in a game played in Toronto on Wednesday evening. York had led by as much as 17 points in the third quarter before the Waterloo comeback. Warriors move to 0-3 on the season.
 
Waterloo started the game just 1 for 5 with three turnovers as York opened with a 7-2 lead. York had a 10-point lead at one time, but the first quarter ended with an 18-11 score for York.
 
By half time York had widened the lead to 37-25 as they shot 52% for the first half compared to Waterloo at just 39%. Waterloo did not shoot a single free throw in the first half.
 
To start the second half, York continued with their hot shooting and had their largest lead of the game at 42-25 with just 1:35 gone in the second half. A 10-2 run for Waterloo on the backs Jon Ravenhorst (Sarnia) and Myles Charvis (Mississauga) who each contributed a three gave a possibility of a comeback. By the end of three quarters, the gap was still 12 points at 52-40 in favour of York.
 
A Myles Charvis (Mississauga) three with 7:35 left brought the margin back to single digits and not long after Waterloo went on a 11-2 run to tie the score at 58-58 with 2:47 remaining. It looked like Waterloo had York on the ropes but Richard Iheadindu responded with a three for York and Waterloo was unable to get over the hump and take the lead. Waterloo ended the game like they started, hitting just 1 for 5 to close out the game.
 
The game ended with a 67-60 victory for the York Lions. For the game, Waterloo was out-rebounded by a margin of 35-21 and shot just three free throws the entire game. York hit 16 of 24 free throws.
 
For Waterloo, Jaspreet Gill (Oliver) had 18 points and 4 assists and Myles Charvis (Mississauga) had 10. No Waterloo player had more than 4 rebounds in the contest.
 
York was led by Richard Iheadindu with 19 points while Nick Tufegdzich scored 15 points and added 11 boards. Nathan Culbreath was one rebound short of a double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds.
 
With the loss Waterloo is winless in their first three OUA league games. The next game is Friday night as they travel to Kingston to meet the Queen's Gaels. In exhibition action at the Naismith Classic in October, Waterloo beat Queen's 74-70. Catch the game on OUA.TV.
