Box Score The Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team looked unbeatable through forty minutes on Sunday afternoon. Then, the York Lions used the final twenty to steal a victory.
The Lions scored three times in the third period and Lisa Stathopulos scored the only goal of the shootout as York topped the Warriors 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday in North York.
Rianna Langford scored twice and added an assist for the Lions, who climb to 2-3-0 on the young season.
Angela MacDonald (Kitchener) notched two points for the Warriors, who fall to 1-1-2.
Megan Lee made 27 stops in regulation and overtime for the Lions, adding three more stops in the shootout to earn the win. Veteran keeper
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) turned aside 21 shots in the Warriors defeat.
The Warriors looked to be in control after
Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver) and MacDonald each scored first period goals for the Warriors. Waterloo battoned down the hatches in a scoreless middle frame, they looked poised to get back into the win column for the first time since opening weekend.
After leading 2-0 on the scoreboard and 19-11 on the shot clock after two periods, the Warriors actually needed a late goal from
Carolyn Burke (Mississauga) just to force overtime. York came out firing on all cylinders in the final frame, scoring three times in the first 6:35 of the period.
That dominant span included to straight goals from Langford, in a span of just over two minutes. After Burke's equalizer with less than four minutes to play, the Warriors had chances to win the game in overtime, outshooting York 3-1 in the extra stanza. But they couldn't solve Lee, and the Lions grabbed the extra point.
The Warriors will now return home for the first time in nearly a month, as they face the Windsor Lancers on Saturday and the Western Mustangs on Sunday. Puck drop for each game at the Columbia Icefield Arena is slated for 2:30pm.
