Box Score For the second time in two nights, the Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team found themselves on the wrong side of late-game heroics in an opponent's home opener.
Western rookie Katie Hubert scored her first career CIS goal 1:07 into overtime, and the Mustangs erased three different one-goal deficits en route to a 4-3 win over the Warriors on Saturday night in London.
Katelyn Gosling added a goal and two assists for the Mustangs, who open their season with a win.
Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) scored her third goal in four games for the Warriors, who fall to 1-1-2 on the season. Waterloo goaltender
Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) gave her team a chance to win, stopping 24 shots in the loss. Western netminder Kelly Campbell made 18 saves for the victory.
Marriott opened the scoring midway through the first on the power play, and Western's Ali Beres and Waterloo's
Rebecca Rutherford (Ajax) exchanged late-period goals to make it 2-1 Warriors after 20 minutes.
Gosling evened the score at 2 midway through the second, but the tie lasted for only 31 seconds –
Marissa Redmond (Ajax) struck back for Waterloo and restored the Warriors' one-goal advantage heading into the final frame.
It looked as though the Warriors would be able to hold on for the victory, but another Western rookie – Tia Kipfer – scored her first career goal to tie the game 3-3 with less than five minutes to play in regulation. That set up the heroics for Hubert, and heartbreak for the Warriors.
The Warriors will now wrap up their three-game road streak with a game in Toronto against the York Lions on Sunday, October 26. Puck drop is slated for 2 pm.
