On many occasions over the past few seasons, the Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team used good penalty killing and stellar goalkeeping to frustrate opponents and stay in games, even when they were wildly outchanced. On Friday night, the Windsor Lancers gave them a taste of their own medicine.

Windsor netminder Melissa Kozovski made 30 saves, and the Lancers scored twice in the third period to steal a 3-2 victory against the Warriors at the South Windsor Arena.

Kayla Dodson notched two points, including the game-winning goal with under two minutes to play in regulation. Candace Kourounis also added a goal and an assist for the Lancers, who made their season opener a successful one.

Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) and Carolyn Burke (Mississauga) found the score sheet for the Warriors, who fall to 1-1-1 on the young season. Veteran goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) turned aside 19 shots in the defeat.

The Warriors certainly had their chances to take two points on the road, as they outshot the Lancers 32-22 overall, and 12-7 in the final 20 minutes. But Kozovski stood tall, and the Warriors were once again plagued by their inability to cash on the power play.

Just nine days after going 1-for-7 on the power play in a season-opening shootout loss to Nipissing, Waterloo was only 1-for-5 against the Lancers, who took four straight minors at one point in the second and third periods.

Burke scored the only goal the Warriors mustered on the man advantage, but for a time, it looked like it could be the difference in the game – it gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead early in the third, and they were carrying the play. But Kourounis struck just before the 10-minute mark to pull the Lancers even, setting up Dodson's late heroics.
