Box Score In a game that included 91 shots on goal, the Waterloo Warriors needed one more to find the back of the net.
Parker Van Buskirk turned aside 19 third-period shots, many while Windsor led by only one goal, as the Lancers hung on for a 4-2 victory over the Warriors on Saturday night at the South Windsor Arena.
Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) had a pair of assists in the loss, which drops the Warriors to 9-9-2 on the season. A trio of Lancers – Spencer Pommels, Evan Stibbard, and MacAuley MacDonnell – had two points apiece, pushing Windsor's record to 13-8-0.
Van Buskirk made a total of 43 stops in the Windsor cage for the win, while Warriors goaltender
Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) was just as solid in the loss, turning aside 42 shots.
The Lancers drew first blood midway through the opening period when Matt Beaudoin found the back of the net to put the hosts up 1-0. The lead was short-lived though, as
Andy Smith (Rosetown/) cashed on the power play less than 30 seconds later to even the score at 1-1.
The Warriors would have likely been pleased with a knotted game after one period, but the Lancers had other ideas. With only 4 seconds left in the opening frame, Kenny Bradford scored on a man advantage to put Windsor up 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The second period saw only one goal, as the Lancers extended their lead to 3-1 with a Pommels marker midway through the frame. Just as they did in their last trip to Windsor - game 1 of last season's OUA West Division final - the Warriors would be forced to erase a two-goal deficit in the final period.
And the third frame certainly started off on the right foot for the visitors.
Matt Amadio (Sault Ste. Marie/) put home his second goal of the season to make it 3-2 just over three minutes into the period, and the Warriors kept coming.
Waterloo's best chance to even the score might have come with just over 5 minutes to play, when the Warriors were given a man-advantage opportunity. But they couldn't beat Van Buskirk, and MacDonnell salted away the win with an empty-net goal.
The Warriors will now turn their focus to a big home game with the first-place Ryerson Rams next Friday at the Columbia Icefield Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 PM.
