Warriors fall to Badgers in marathon shootout

Box Score The Warriors dropped their second straight game to open the New Year falling to the Brock Badgers 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon in St. Catharines.  The Warriors could not hold on to their one goal lead in the third period and the Badgers scored in the 10th round of the shootout to earn the extra point.

The loss drops Waterloo's record to 6-7-4 while Brock won their third straight game to improve to 5-10-1 on the season.


Waterloo opened the scoring 1:14 into the opening period as Amy Barnard (Cambridge/) beat Brock rookie goaltender Jenna Sosnoski (New Dundee, Ont.) for her third goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later at 3:39, Bailey Bradt (Ilderton/) and Rachel Marriott (Waterloo/) setup Kelly Toms (Ennismore/) to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. 

Brock would cut the lead in half at 6:03 of the first period as senior Leigh Vanderveen (NOTL, Ont.) buried it past Waterloo starter Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/) for her eighth goal of the campaign.

Waterloo regained the two-goal lead at 12:24 as Marriott and Redmond found Nicole Ballantyne (Toronto/) who registered her second goal of the season.  Marriott's helper was her third of the contest and team leading 12th point. 

The lone goal of the second period came at the 1:10 mark as Fickel setup senior Kaitie Phelan (Kitchener, Ont.) for the shorthanded goal, making it a one-goal game 3-2 at the end of 40 minutes.

Six minutes into the third period, Brock would tie the game 3-3 as rookie Victoria Chapman (Belleville, Ont.) recorded her first career OUA goal. Fickel registered her third assist of the game and moved into third all-time in career assists surpassing Briar Komenda (2003-07) (48). 

After a scoreless overtime, the game would be decided after 10 shooters as sophomore Sarah Dolden (Brampton, Ont.) slid it past Bouwhuis for the game winner.  Marissa Redmond (Ajax/) was the only Warrior to tally a goal in the 10 rounds.

The Warriors will be back in action this Saturday as they welcome the Ryerson Rams to the CIF arena for a 2:30pm game.
