Vincent Chan hits a forehand
Saturday, Sept. 14
Montreal 5, Waterloo 2

The Waterloo Warriors opened their 2013 campaign with a pair of losses over the weekend against two of the more powerful tennis teams in the OUA.

On Saturday, the Warriors hosted the University of Montreal. Though the visitors won 5-2, the matches were more competitive than the scoreline indicates. The Warriors have one rookie in their lineup this season and he was one of the bright spots of the afternoon. John Chan (Whistler/) and the Warriors no. 1 player Vincent Chan (Markham/) earned the two points for the Warriors in singles play.

V. Chan provided the first point of the day for the Warriors when he overcame a slow start to beat Colomban Bounine 7-6, 6-2. The second point came in the last match completed that day with J.Chan playing at no. 4 getting the better of his more experienced opponent Augustin Lazarus 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. The rookie's maturity on court was impressive and he is a welcome addition to the team.  The Warriors had lost the doubles point earlier.

Sunday, Sept. 15
Western 6, Waterloo 1

The Warriors traveled to London to face last year's OUA champions, the Western Mustangs. Playing without V. Chan, their no. 1 player, the Waterloo team were nevertheless competitive in doubles play. The no. 2 team of Alex Sahu and Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) had a good win against Zack Harmath and Sasha Leznoff  winning 8-6. Unfortunately the no. 1 and no. 3 teams lost in hard-fought battles. John Chan (Whistler/) playing at no. 2 provided the Warriors with a win beating Alex Koshetov 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 again in the last match of the day preventing a sweep by the Mustangs.
