Warriors cap magical preseason weekend in Huntsville

Kain Allicock (22) had four points in Waterloo's 6-0 win over Nipissing in Huntsville on Saturday.
To say their preseason road trip to cottage country was a success for the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team would be an understatement.

The Warriors capped a successful weekend of team bonding and minor hockey tutelage with a decisive 6-0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers in their first preseason game of 2013 at the Don Lough Arena in Huntsville last Saturday.

The exhibition game was a culmination of a two-day training camp trip for the Warriors, who stayed at the UWaterloo Summit Centre for the Environment in Huntsville. After arriving on Friday and hitting the links at North Granite Ridge golf course for some team bonding, the Warriors took over the local rinks for Huntsville Minor Hockey's Waterloo Warriors Hockey Day event on Saturday.

The Warriors players served as instructors for a series of hockey schools that were free for all Huntsville Minor Hockey players throughout the day. Waterloo head coach Brian Bourque estimated close to 200 young hockey players took part in the camps.

After the youth camps on the ice, Bourque, along with assistants Trevor Fraser, Brett MacLean, Thomas Black and Nipissing head coach Mike McParland, presented a free coaching clinic for local minor hockey coaches.

The feature event – Saturday's game – turned out to be a romp for the weekend's defacto hosts. Kain Allicock (Markham/) scored twice and added two assists as the Warriors scored two goals in each period to cruise to the 6-0 victory. Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) and Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) shared the shutout in the Waterloo net.

Before the game, the Warriors were given one last surprise as Olympic freestyle skier and Huntsville native Dara Howell met the team and wished them luck.

The Warriors will continue their exhibition schedule this weekend when they travel to London to take part in Western University's annual preseason tournament. On Friday, September 20, the Warriors will take on the Queen's Golden Gaels before facing the perennial powerhouse McGill Redmen on Saturday, September 21.
