Deja Vu: Warriors complete sweep in playoff upset over Thunderwolves

Warriors goaltender Keaton Hartigan was brilliant, making 43 saves in game 2 against Lakehead Friday night
Box Score The Waterloo Warriors were all too happy for history to repeat itself Friday night in Thunder Bay.

For the second time in three postseasons, the sixth-seed Warriors travelled north and completed a sweep of the third-seed Lakehead Thunderwolves when they claimed a 4-2 win in game two of the OUA West division quarterfinals on Friday night.

Andy Smith (Rosetown/) scored two of Waterloo's three first-period goals and Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) was spectacular in making 43 saves – 28 in the final 2 periods – en route to Waterloo's shocking upset. The Warriors also got three points from Joe Underwood (Canton/) and two assists from Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) in the series-clinching victory.

Luke Judson scored both of Lakehead's goals in a losing cause, and Mike Hammond and Adam Sergerie assisted on both goals. Alex Dupuis took the loss after allowing 3 goals on just 10 shots before being replaced by Jeff Bosch late in the first. Bosch was perfect in relief, kicking aside 11 shots.

After a scoreless opening ten minutes, the Warriors seized control of the period when Underwood's point shot squeaked through a crowd and by Dupuis for a 1-0 Waterloo lead. Smith then converted for his second goal of the series on Waterloo's first man advantage of the night, staking the Warriors to a 2-goal lead.

Just over five minutes after that, Smith struck again when he went high glove side to finish off a pretty passing play on a 3-on-2 rush. Smith's second of the night made the score 3-0 in favour of the guests, and it also chased Dupuis from the Lakehead net.

Judson tried to jump-start his club with a goal just 36 seconds into the second period to make the score 3-1. The Wolves appeared to feed off their first marker of the game, but Hartigan stood tall in the frame and ensured Waterloo would enter the final 20 minutes with a two-goal lead. The Wolves outshot the Warriors 16-5 in the second period.

Judson again awoke the Thunderwolves faithful early in the third, when he beat Hartigan in front to cut the Waterloo advantage to 3-2. The puck seldom left the Warriors' defensive zone in the third, but the Waterloo defence corps – undermanned after a first-period injury to Greg Steffes (Amherstburg/) – kept Lakehead at bay as time ticked down.

With the goaltender out and under a minute to play, Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) stole the puck at center ice only to hit the post on his attempt at the empty net. The Wolves worked the puck back down to the Waterloo zone, but Hartigan made another two key saves and Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) won an important defensive zone draw to help Waterloo hold the lead.

With four seconds left, Jarred Parent (West Montrose/) took a lead pass in the neutral zone and slid the puck into the vacated cage to solidify victory for the Warriors. Underwood drew an assist on the insurance marker, giving him his team-leading sixth point of the series.

The Warriors will now move on to the OUA west division semifinals, where their opponent is still to be determined. If the top-seeded Western Mustangs finish off the UOIT Ridgebacks in round one, they will be the Warriors' next opponent. If UOIT storms back to upset Western, Waterloo would then face the winner of the Laurier-Guelph series in round two.

The Warriors are likely to open the postseason's next round on the road next Wednesday, before returning home for game two on Friday or Saturday. For complete scheduling details as they become available, follow the Warriors on Twitter @uwwarriorhockey, or visit www.gowarriorsgo.ca

Notes:  The Warriors went 1-for-3 on the man advantage, while Lakehead went 0-for-2…All twelve Warriors forwards recorded at least a point in the two-game series…Hartigan pushed his lifetime playoff record versus Lakehead to 4-0, with a 0.93 goals against average, a .971 save percentage, and two shutouts.
