Box Score The Waterloo women's hockey team opened up their OUA quarter-final series with a tough 4-0 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at the Memorial Rec Complex.
In what was Waterloo's first playoff game since 2007, the visiting side went toe-to-toe with the top ranked Hawks in the opening 30 minutes of the game but Laurier fired home four straight goals in the second half of the contest to earn the shutout victory.
Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont. opened the scoring with her first career playoff goal at the 12:48 mark of the second period and the Hawks held a slim 1-goal lead into the final frame.
The Hawks would take over in the final period using their speed on the big ice surface and would notch three more markers past Waterloo goalie
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/). Paula Lagamba (Toronto) made it 2-0 for Laurier early in the period before Devon Skeats (Whitby) scored back-to-back goals in less than three minutes to secure the game one victory.
Bouwhuis was busy in the Warrior net facing 35 shots and making 31 saves while Laurier keeper Erika Thunder of Buffalo Point, Man. was perfect turning aside all 21 shots faced.
The Warriors who have played three games in four nights will enjoy some much needed rest before hitting the CIF ice in game two of the best-of-three series on Saturday, February 16 at 2pm. The game can be seen live on the
Streaming Sports Network (SSN Canada).
