Box Score For much of the 2012-13 season, Waterloo Warriors men's hockey coach
Brian Bourque was unhappy with the way his team started games. In the last game of their regular season, he'll be more unhappy with the way they finished.
The Windsor Lancers scored two late third-period goals and Waterloo failed to grab the fifth seed in the OUA West division, as the Lancers squeaked out a 3-2 victory at the Columbia Icefield Arena on Sunday evening.
Windsor's Derek Lanoue scored the eventual game winner at 16:09 of the third period, just 67 seconds after Jadran Beljo evened the score for the Lancers. Parker Van Buskirk made 29 saves in the Lancer net to earn the victory.
It wasn't all bad news for the Warriors though, as
Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) and
Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) each reached personal milestones with two assists each in the loss. For Larson, he finishes the season with 45 points, claiming the CIS scoring title in the process. Meanwhile, Behenna's 39 points were tops among all CIS rookies.
Fifth-year senior
Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/), playing in his last home game as a Warrior, was outstanding at times in the Waterloo cage, making 35 saves in a losing cause.
The Warriors came out with the bulk of puck possession and pressure, and they were rewarded with an early power play. On the man advantage, Van Buskirk robbed Larson in the slot before
Kain Allicock (Markham/) slapped home the rebound for a 1-0 Waterloo lead after one period.
The Warriors extended their lead to two in the second period, when Larson's wrister squeaked through Van Buskirk and initiated a fire drill around the Lancer crease. The loose puck found its way to
Andy Smith (Rosetown/) on the back post, who made no mistake in giving Waterloo a 2-0 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, Windsor responded on a down-low scramble of their own, when D.J. Turner poked a loose puck just under the outstretched left pad of Hartigan to cut the Warriors lead to 2-1 after forty minutes.
The Warriors appeared to start protecting the lead in the third, but the Lancers began forcing more turnovers inside the Waterloo zone. Windsor evened things up with just under five minutes to play when Paul Bezzo's point shot hit traffic in front and dropped right on Beljo's stick, who rifled it over Hartigan's glove side.
Then, just over a minute later, the Warriors were once again unable to clear, and they surrendered possession at their own blue line. Lanoue got loose behind the Warrior defence, and worked a mini 2-on-1 with Matt Beaudoin to perfection, giving the Lancers the 3-2 lead that they would protect the rest of the way.
With the win, the Lancers finish at 18-9-1, good for second place in the OUA's West division and a first-round date with the seventh seed York Lions. The Warriors finish at 12-11-5, and in sixth in the division, setting up a first-round showdown with the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Dates and times will be posted at gowarriorsgo.ca and on twitter @uwwarriorhockey as playoff schedules become available.
