Thunderwolves outlast Warriors in lengthy shootout

Kirt Hill scored his eighth goal in the last seven games in Waterloo's 4-3 shootout loss to Lakehead Friday night.
Box Score Sooner or later, sheer odds suggest the Waterloo Warriors will find some fortune in one-goal games. Unfortunately, they didn't find it Friday night in Thunder Bay.

Lakehead's Adam Sergerie scored in the sixth round of the shootout, and Waterloo lost their tenth game in the last 11 decided by one goal as the host Thunderwolves topped the Warriors 4-3 in a shootout in front of a packed crowd of more than 3300 at the Fort William Gardens on Friday night.

Kain Allicock (Markham/) had two goals for the Warriors in the loss, and Josh Woolley (Cambridge/) added assists on both of Allicock's markers. Sergerie, the Wolves' captain, also had a goal and assist in regulation to go along with his shootout winner. With the loss, the Warriors fall to 11-9-5, and into a 6th-place tie in the OUA West division with the York Lions.

After being pulled in his last start against the UOIT Ridgebacks, Warriors goaltender Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) bounced back in a big way, turning aside 37 shots in the loss. Lakehead's Alex Dupuis matched him save-for-save, as he stopped 37 shots of his own to earn the victory.

Trevor Gamache of the Thunderwolves opened up the scoring six minutes into a first period that was, at least on the shot clock, dominated by the home team. Allicock's first of the night evened things at one midway through the period, and that's the way the score stayed through 20 minutes – no doubt a disappointment for Lakehead, who outshot the Warriors 16-8 in the first frame.

Waterloo began limiting the shots and chances of the hosts in the second, and they were rewarded with a lead when Allicock beat Dupuis before the period was three minutes old. Waterloo held onto that lead until Sergerie scored at 13:45 of the second, as the captain's goal ignited the packed house.

They were soon silenced by Waterloo's captain though, as Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) put the Warriors back in front just 52 seconds later, with assists going to Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) and Andy Smith (Rosetown/). Hartigan stood tall throughout the rest of the frame, and Waterloo entered the third up 3-2.

A miscue at the Waterloo bench led to the eventual tying goal, as Lakehead's Mike Hammond tipped a point shot past Hartigan on the power play to even the score at 3 early in the third. The man advantage was the result of a too many men call on the Warriors, who just about killed off the penalty before Hammond scored with 12 seconds left in the power play.

The score remained tied throughout the third period and the overtime session, and both teams even struggled finding the net in the shootout. Lakehead's Keith Grondin and Waterloo's Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) exchanged shootout goals in rounds one and two, respectively, before Dupuis and Hartigan shut the door. Finally, in the sixth round, Sergerie moved Hartigan to his left and slipped the puck five-hole for the game-winning marker.

The same two clubs will get right back at it tomorrow night, as the Warriors will close out their road schedule against the Thunderwolves before returning home next weekend for the last two regular season games. Puck drop tomorrow night is slated for 7:30.

Notes: The Warriors went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Lakehead went 1-for-4…Warriors Video coach and Legal Studies major Thomas Black, who often dresses as a third goaltender in practices, served as the backup goaltender. Goalie Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) is ill and didn't make the trip to Thunder Bay…Larson went pointless, and now sits tied for second in the nation in scoring.
