Box Score The Warriors stuck with a talented Laurier Golden Hawks squad for 30 minutes but faltered in the final quarter as the visitors outscored the black and gold 24-14 in the fourth quarter to take the battle of Waterloo 94-80.
Waterloo had no answer for rookie forward Jack Simmons who had 28 points in the win going an impressive 13-of-17 from the field while also adding eight rebounds.
Other Hawks chipping in on the night were Patrick Donnelly of Oakville, Ont., who had a season-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while Jamar Forde of Mississauga, Ont., had 17 points and six rebounds.
Mike Helsby (Waterloo/) led the Warriors offensive attack with 21 points. Teammate
Matt Glibota (Sault Ste Marie/) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., posted the games only other double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Wayne Bridge (North York/Eastern Commerce) also put together a strong game with 18 points in the loss.
In what was a tightly-contested affair throughout the contest, both teams shot the ball extremely well. The Hawks posted a field goal percentage of 46.9 percent while the Warriors finished at 45.9 percent. However, the difference in the game proved to be Laurier's ability to rebound the basketball and create second chances to score. In total, the Hawks had 15 offensive rebounds, which led to 81 shot attempts and 38 field goals compared to just 61 shot attempts and 28 field goals for Waterloo.
The Warriors will close out 2013 in St. Catharines on Saturday as they take on the Brock Badgers who picked up their first win of the season last night over Western. Waterloo remains the only winless team in the OUA and will hope to change that on Saturday night.
