Box Score Ask any visiting National Hockey League team from the past 60 years, and they'll tell you that it's extraordinarily tough to earn a win on a Saturday night in Montreal. Unfortunately for the Waterloo Warriors, that theory seems to be extended to the CIS ranks as well.
The McGill Redmen got two-point efforts from a trio of players, and two quick goals in the second period were the eventual difference as the hosts downed the Warriors 4-1 on Saturday night at McConnell Arena in Montreal.
J.P. Mathieu, Guillaume Langelier-Parent, and Mathieu Pompei all contributed twice on the scoresheet for McGill (9-3-1), while
Colin Behenna (Waterloo/) scored the lone marker for the Warriors (5-7-1). Jacob Gervais-Chouinard turned aside 29 shots in the Redmen net for the victory, while
Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) made 38 saves for the Warriors in the loss.
McGill jumped out to a fast start, outshooting the Warriors 9-2 at one point midway through the first. But while Leclerc was able to hold the fort initially, Alexis Millette batted home a bouncing puck on the power play, giving the Redmen a 1-0 lead after the first.
Behenna was quick to respond for the Warriors, equalizing the game at the one-minute mark of the second period. And while both teams appeared to settle into the defensive battle, McGill rearguard Ryan McKiernan beat Leclerc for the eventual game-winner on the man advantage midway through the second. The Redmen added insurance when Mathieu tallied just moments later, making the score 3-1 after forty minutes.
Try as they might, the Warriors were never able to draw to within a goal in a tightly-defended third period. Langelier-Parent found an empty net with just seconds remaining, salting away the 4-1 Redmen victory.
The Warriors will now return home for their last two games before the exam and holiday break, as they host the RMC Paladins and Carleton Ravens next Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
Notes: McGill went 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Warriors went 0-for-3…the 41 shots faced were a season high for Leclerc…the Warriors were once again without
Ryan Molle (Calgary/) and
Sam Caldwell (Cape Breton/), who were home in Waterloo with academic commitments.
