Motherwell leads Warriors past Guelph in home opener

Tyler Motherwell putting away one of his 12 kills
Box Score Waterloo men's volleyball continued their hot start to the season with a 3-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon at the PAC.

The Warriors took the first two sets 25-18, 25-13 before Guelph bounced back with a third set victory 25-19.  The Warriors then re-entered their starters and clinched the match, winning the fourth set 25-15.

The win puts Waterloo atop the OUA standings with a 4-1 record tied with York while Guelph drops to 2-4 on the young season.

Tyler Motherwell (Toronto) was a pivotal factor in the Waterloo attack posting 12 kills in the middle on only 19 attempts and only having three errors in the process.  Setter Scott Thomson (St. Marys/) did a tremendous job of giving Motherwell good looks all afternoon long.  Motherwell also posted six blocks and four service aces while Thomson tallied 41 assists in the win.

Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines/) was also a factor in the middle posting seven kills and two blocks.  The fourth year recreation and leisure student also fared well from the service line with three aces.

Rounding out Waterloo's attack was outside hitters James Evans (Rockwood) and Aleks Poldma (Toronto) with nine kills each.

Marc Wilson gave Guelph a chance with his 12 kills but the Warriors were too much for the third year left side and his Gryphons to handle on the afternoon.  Patrick Strzalkwoski was also solid with his 11 kills in a losing effort.

Waterloo will enjoy the rest of the week off before returning to the PAC next Friday for a game with the Toronto Varsity Blues at 6pm.  The game can be seen live on Warriors TV.
