Singing the Blues: Warriors thumped by Toronto

Kain Allicock scored for the Warriors in their 8-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday night.
Box Score Toronto has become Canada's motion picture hotbed, but when the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team watches game film from their visit to the University of Toronto, all they will see is a horror movie.

U of T's Josh Brown netted a natural hat trick and Michael Markovic added three points as the Varsity Blues blew away the Warriors 8-2 at Varsity Arena on Saturday night.

Luke Lynes (Washington/) had two points in the loss for the Warriors, who fall to 3-3-2 in the young season. The Blues also got two-point efforts from Blake Boddy and Andrew Doyle, as they improve to 5-3-0. Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) was saddled with the loss for the Warriors between the pipes, turning aside 26 shots before being replaced by Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) in the second period. Brett Willows made 43 saves for the win in Toronto's net.

After exchanging goals midway through the first period, the Blues vaulted ahead with goals from Doyle and Brown late in the first to make the score 3-1 for Toronto after twenty minutes of play.

The game remained 3-1 in favour of the Blues through the first half of the second period. But just as it looked like the Warriors had settled things down, Brown struck twice in a 34-second span to complete the natural hat trick and put Toronto ahead 5-1. Markovic added his first of the night before the period ended, and all of a sudden the Warriors were trailing 6-1 after two periods.

Kain Allicock (Markham/) cut the lead to four with a goal just shy of the 11-minute mark of the third. But the Blues were not to be denied, and Markovic restored the lead to five with a penalty shot goal past Morrison with just over six minutes left. Connor Cleverley rounded out the scoring for the host Varsity Blues late in the third period, making the final 8-2.

The Warriors will now return home, learn from the loss, and get set for one of their longest road trips of the season – they'll head east to La Belle Province next weekend for a Queen's Cup rematch with the UQTR Patriotes on Friday before taking on the Concordia Stingers Saturday.

Notes: The Warriors went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Toronto went 0-for-1…Chris Chappell (Pickering/) had his 7-game point streak snapped. It's the first time he's been held off the scoresheet in his CIS career…Cleverley's goal was the first in his CIS career.
