Former Campus Rec referee makes NHL debut

Former University of Waterloo student and Campus Recreation referee T.J. Luxmore will be making his debut as an official in the NHL (National Hockey League) tonight in Detroit.  Luxmore, who worked in many different capacities for campus rec, will step onto the ice of Joe Louis Arena wearing the stripes for the Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings contest.

Luxmore was an intramural referee, referee-in-chief, and convenor at uWaterloo while officiating over 500 campus rec games.  Upon graduating from the department of science, Luxmore turned his attention to developing as a referee and quickly climbed the ranks.

After spending time in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League), Luxmore made the leap to the ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) and spent two seasons there.  In September 2012, Luxmore's dream came true being named to the NHL officiating crew.  After a full year of development in NHL's farm league (AHL), Luxmore earned his stripes and will hope to make an impression tonight in Detroit.

Luxmore credits his time in the East Coast league to his leap to the NHL.  "Working in the ECHL for two seasons gave me valuable experience working with professional players," comments Luxmore.  "Working with experienced and knowledgeable supervisors allowed me to grow and develop both on and off the ice.  The caliber of hockey in the ECHL has prepared me for the next level and I am very grateful for the opportunity with the NHL."

"We knew TJ would make it to the NHL. It was always a matter of when, not if," mentioned Associate Director of Campus Recreation Marc Iturriaga. "TJ brought strong leadership and mentoring to our officials, and is an example of the type of student leader that makes Campus Rec at uWaterloo one of the best in the country."
